Chemistry has a reputation for being difficult.
I have met many students who come into a lesson convinced that Chemistry is simply not for them. Some are confused by chemical equations. Others understand the theory but become stuck as soon as calculations appear. Some can memorize definitions perfectly but struggle when an examination question asks them to apply the same idea in a different way.
Over the years, one thing has become very clear to me: most students can learn Chemistry when it is explained in a way that makes sense to them.
I am Samuel Barnabas, a private Chemistry tutor based in Toronto, Canada, and I work with high school, college and university students who need clearer explanations, stronger foundations, better problem-solving strategies, or more confidence in Chemistry.
My academic background includes Industrial Chemistry and Science Laboratory Technology, together with additional training in Medicinal Chemistry. Teaching Chemistry has been an important part of my professional journey for more than a decade.
But qualifications alone do not make an effective tutor.
What matters just as much is being able to take an idea that looks complicated on the page and explain it in a form that a student can understand, visualize and eventually solve independently.
That is the kind of Chemistry tutoring I aim to provide.
Chemistry Should Make Sense, Not Just Be Memorized
One of the biggest problems I see in Chemistry education is excessive memorization.
Students try to remember:
- formulas,
- reaction types,
- periodic trends,
- definitions,
- naming rules,
- equations,
- oxidation numbers,
- solubility rules,
- acid-base relationships,
- calculation procedures.
Memorization certainly has a place in Chemistry. There are facts, symbols and conventions students need to know.
But Chemistry becomes much easier when the student understands why something happens.
Why does sodium readily form a positive ion?
Why does chlorine tend to gain an electron?
Why do some compounds dissolve in water while others do not?
Why does increasing concentration sometimes increase reaction rate?
Why do we balance chemical equations?
Why does a strong acid behave differently from a weak acid?
Why does equilibrium shift when conditions change?
Once students begin answering questions like these, Chemistry stops looking like hundreds of disconnected facts.
It becomes a connected subject.
That change in understanding is what I try to create in my lessons.
Why Students Struggle With ChemistryThere is rarely just one reason.
A student's difficulty may have started long before the chapter currently being studied.
Weak Mathematical Foundations
Chemistry uses Mathematics extensively.
Students may encounter:
- ratios,
- percentages,
- scientific notation,
- significant figures,
- rearranging formulas,
- proportional reasoning,
- logarithms,
- graphs,
- unit conversions.
A student may understand the concept of stoichiometry but still struggle because ratios are weak.
Another may understand acids and bases but find pH calculations difficult because logarithms are unfamiliar.
Sometimes the Chemistry is not actually the main problem.
Part of my work as a tutor is identifying where the difficulty really begins.
Memorizing Procedures Without Understanding Them
A student may memorize:
moles = mass ÷ molar mass
but still not understand what a mole represents.
The formula may help with one familiar problem, but the student becomes lost when the question is changed.
I prefer to build the concept first and then introduce the mathematical relationship.
When students understand what each quantity represents, formulas become far easier to use correctly.
Chemistry Happens at a Level We Cannot Always See
Atoms, ions, molecules and electrons are too small to observe directly in an ordinary classroom.
That makes Chemistry unusual.
Students are often expected to imagine what is happening at a molecular level while simultaneously interpreting chemical symbols and equations.
For this reason, I frequently use models, diagrams, illustrations, graphs and everyday comparisons when explaining concepts. My public tutoring profile also describes this visual and example-based teaching approach.
For example, the equation
2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O
is more meaningful when a student understands what those coefficients represent at the particle level rather than treating the equation as letters and numbers that must somehow be balanced.
Classes Move Quickly
Teachers and professors have curricula to complete.
A classroom lesson cannot always stop for one student who needs an additional twenty minutes to understand a concept.
Once the class moves forward, the next chapter may depend on the previous one.
That is how small learning gaps become large ones.
Private tutoring gives us the opportunity to identify those gaps and work through them without the pressure of keeping pace with an entire classroom.
My Approach as a Private Chemistry TutorI do not believe every student should be taught Chemistry in exactly the same way.
A Grade 10 student encountering ionic bonding for the first time needs a different approach from a university student studying Organic Chemistry.
A student preparing for an examination has different priorities from someone rebuilding their Chemistry foundation after falling behind.
My lessons therefore begin with the student.
1. Find Out What the Student Actually Understands
Before trying to correct a problem, I need to know where the problem begins.
Sometimes I ask students to explain a concept in their own words.
Sometimes we solve a few questions together.
The purpose is not to embarrass the student or test them unnecessarily.
It is to distinguish between:
- concepts they understand,
- concepts they partly understand,
- concepts that need to be rebuilt.
That distinction makes tutoring much more efficient.
2. Explain the Concept Clearly
I try to move from the familiar to the unfamiliar.
When possible, I connect Chemistry to things students already know.
Acids and bases can be related to everyday substances.
Gas behaviour can be connected to pressure, temperature and familiar physical situations.
Reaction rates can be understood through collisions between particles.
Chemical equilibrium becomes clearer when students understand that reactions can continue in both directions even when concentrations appear unchanged.
Chemistry becomes far less intimidating when abstract ideas are connected to something the student can picture.
3. Use Visual Representations
Chemistry is a highly visual subject.
Diagrams, molecular representations, graphs, tables and reaction models can sometimes explain what several paragraphs of text cannot.
I regularly use visual explanations because I have found that students often remember what they can clearly visualize.
4. Work Through Examples Together
After explaining the concept, we apply it.
I demonstrate representative questions and explain the reasoning behind each step.
The student should understand not only what I am doing but why I am doing it.
5. Let the Student Solve Problems
Watching someone else solve Chemistry questions can create a false sense of confidence.
The real test comes when the student has to solve one independently.
For this reason, students gradually take more responsibility during lessons.
I may provide guidance at first, but the goal is for the student to eventually work through similar questions without depending on me.
6. Analyse Mistakes
When a student gets an answer wrong, I do not want to simply replace it with the correct answer.
I want to know why it went wrong.
Was the chemical equation unbalanced?
Was the molar mass calculated incorrectly?
Was a unit conversion missed?
Was the mole ratio reversed?
Was the wrong formula selected?
Was the calculator input incorrect?
The mistake tells us what needs attention.
That is much more useful than simply writing an X beside the answer.
